GIGA:PC
Introduction
Upon arriving at GIGA (or acquiring a new PC), contact the UDI (IT team) for the installation of a new PC using (XENIA).
The UDI team will perform the following tasks on your PC :
- Configure your access to the Internet
- Install/Update the Microsoft Office suite of programs on your PC.
- Install antivirus software on your PC
- Set up a GIGA directory. You are obliged to work in this and only this directory for all your professional, GIGA-related activities.
- Install an automatic, daily back-up system of this GIGA directory. The back-up system that will be installed uses the Dox@ULiège system.
- Insure your PC if it is owned by the ULiège.
After that, one can finally work on GIGA's IT infrastructure which is composed of :
- A very large computing storage (hard drives)
- A synchronized backuping for office documents (DoX)
- A tool to share data with all non-GIGA users (GIGA-Share)
- A development platform community-driven (GitLab)
- High throughtput processing computers (Cluster/Grid)
First steps
After all the basics configuration, through UDIMED-GIGA, all computers come with the basic set of tools including among other things a file and an internet navigators.
For most of GIGA members, it will be enough but some might need more (storage and/or data processing power).
That said, almost everything runs from the sus-mentioned navigators : the user's private space is configured and available in file navigators and several scientific tools within internet navigator by joining a "web address" of its own.
Those tools are -in most case- easy to access/use but that is for the people being inside GIGA.
For those who would want to do the same from outside of it, please refer to the outside GIGA article.
